Premarital Counselling in Hamilton and Online Across Ontario
Getting married is a big deal, and so is getting ready for it.
Planning a life together is exciting, and it also brings up a lot to figure out. Love on its own doesn't teach you how to work through disagreements, talk about money, or stay connected when work and family get busy. Premarital therapy gives you both a calm, supportive space to understand each other more deeply, so you can go into marriage with more clarity and confidence.
I see couples in person at my Hamilton office and online anywhere in Ontario, so you can choose whatever fits your life (and switch between the two whenever you need to).
Why Premarital Therapy?
Most couples reach out to a therapist once a pattern has already settled in and things feel stuck. Premarital therapy flips that around. You get to look at how you two work together while things feel good, there's plenty of goodwill, and you're both open to learning.
Coming to therapy before marriage doesn't mean something is wrong. It can be an incredibly thoughtful and caring thing you can do for one another and for your future together. Counselling can help you:
Have the conversations you've been putting off (or didn't even know you needed to have)
Understand how your families and past experiences shape what you each expect from marriage
Work through disagreements in a way that actually brings you closer
Step into marriage feeling prepared, connected, and on the same page
What We Work On Together
No two couples are the same, so our sessions are shaped around what matters most to you both. Here are some of the areas couples love to explore:
Communication and conflict: how you each react under stress, what really happens when you disagree, and how to repair and reconnect after a tough conversation
Emotional connection: feeling seen and understood, and staying close even when life gets hectic
Money: whether you're a saver or a spender, how you'll handle shared and separate finances, and the money lessons you each picked up growing up
Family and in-laws: setting boundaries, sharing the holidays, honouring cultural or religious traditions, and deciding how involved extended family will be
Roles and expectations: who does what at home, how you'll support each other's careers, and what a fair partnership looks like to each of you
Children and family planning: whether you want kids, when, and the kind of parents you hope to be
Intimacy: feeling comfortable talking about physical and emotional closeness, and keeping it a priority for years to come
Big life changes: moving in together, relocating, blending families, or whatever else is on the horizon
My Approach
In my work with couples, I bring together two approaches I really believe in: the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Both are well researched, and both are incredibly practical.
The Gottman Method gives you real, hands-on tools for communicating, managing conflict, and building friendship and trust. EFT helps you slow down and understand the feelings and needs underneath your reactions, so you can respond to each other with more care and a lot less defensiveness.
Put together, you get both the skills and the insight. You'll leave with practical ways to handle everyday moments, plus a deeper understanding of what each of you needs to feel safe, loved, and connected. Our sessions are collaborative, judgment-free, and sometimes even fun! I'm not there to take sides. I'm there to make sure you both feel heard.
What to Expect
01
Free 15-minute consultation. A relaxed chat where you can tell me what you're hoping for, ask any questions, and get a feel for whether we're a good fit.
02
Getting to know you. In our first session, I'll learn about your relationship, how your story as a couple began, and what you'd love to get out of this work.
03
Focused sessions. We'll dive into the topics that matter most to you, practice new ways of communicating, and gently work through any areas of tension or uncertainty.
04
Looking ahead. We'll wrap up by reflecting on how far you've come and how to keep nurturing your relationship long after our sessions end.
There's no set number of sessions for premarital work. Some couples come for a few focused sessions before the wedding, while others find it helpful enough that they keep going well into married life for maintenance. We'll figure out together what works for your needs and your timeline. You can meet with me in person at my Hamilton office, online from anywhere in Ontario, or a mix of both.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Not at all! Lots of couples come in when things are going really well. This is about building on what's already working and getting ready for what's ahead, not fixing something that's broken.
-
It really depends on you! Some couples come for a few focused sessions before the big day, and many choose to keep going after the wedding as they settle into married life. We'll check in along the way and decide together what feels right.
-
Whenever feels right for you! That said, starting a few months before your wedding gives you room to really reflect, without the pressure of last-minute planning.
-
Many extended health plans cover services from a Registered Social Worker, and I offer direct billing to most major insurance companies to make things easier for you. It's a good idea to check your plan for the details.
-
Absolutely! I offer online sessions for couples anywhere in Ontario, as well as in-person sessions at my Hamilton office. Some couples switch between the two depending on their schedules, and that's completely okay.
-
That's really common, and it's okay. The free consultation is a no-pressure way for both of you to ask questions and see how it feels before deciding anything.
